Casa Querencia

And nothing perishes in the vast universe, believe me, everything changes and takes on a new form.

Casa Querencia
Extension, restoration, and energy upgrade of a single-family house. The original dwelling consisted of a first-floor apartment of about 60 sqm, while the ground floor housed an uninhabitable garage. A complete redistribution of the interior spaces was carried out, creating an open space, a bathroom, and a laundry room on the ground floor and on the first floor the sleeping area with two double bedrooms, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom. The total living space has been increased to 120 sqm. Facades were redesigned with new openings, the building was extended to enclose an existing staircase, and the structure was insulated with common reed and wood fiber. All building systems were installed from scratch. The house has achieved an A2 energy rating.

Every Archingreen project has a story, and this one, perhaps more than any other, is a tale of transformation. It began with a single-family home where only the first floor was habitable, while the ground floor housed an unlivable and unhealthy space. This was our starting point, a chrysalis, the shell of a radical transformation in which the house found new life. Thanks to this project, where there were once uninhabitable spaces, there is now a new home, with a floor area nearly doubled, that live, that welcomes and expands, where every corner has been carefully rethought and designed to be filled with light by those who inhabit it. This metamorphosis, the true protagonist of our story, continues to unfold every day.

Transforming without overhauling

Originally, the first floor of this building was an apartment of about 60 sqm. The ground floor, however, was only a large, dark, and damp garage due to small facade windows and poor ventilation of the ambience. Our work went beyond a simple extension: we completely redistributed the internal spaces and slightly expanded the building’s external structure, all while respecting its original characteristics. The exterior facades were redesigned with new openings to provide great light and airiness to the interior spaces, while we integrated the previously external staircase into the building’s interior, connecting the two floors. In particular, the portion of the building that now houses the staircase was enhanced with a large window that covers almost its entire height, creating a blade of light that illuminates the interiors and gives them a new vitality.

identità originaria
Despite these changes, the house's exterior has preserved its original identity, as with the most profound transformations, the real metamorphosis happened within it. From an uninhabitable space, the ground floor has become the most vital part of the home: an open space with an exposed kitchen of about 35 square meters., supported by steel beams that give the apartment a modern look in line with our clients' tastes, this space opens onto the private garden, creating a seamless connection with the outside. In addition to the living area, the ground floor now includes a service bathroom, a pantry, and a convenient laundry area.
The internal staircase leads to the upper floor, where we created two spacious double bedrooms and a bathroom with a tub and shower. The result is a property completely redesigned from a functional, aesthetic, and structural point of view, with almost double the initial square footage available to its occupants.

Transforming for life: a healing Architecture

In addition to redefining the internal spaces, we reimagined and transformed the entire envelope of this building. The first thing to do was finally make the ground floor habitable, one of the biggest challenges of this project, but also the hub of the home's rebirth. The property, which was in poor condition and unhealthy due to humidity, was completely restored, starting from the foundations. We created a ventilated crawl space by digging a 50-centimeter-deep space on the ground floor to prevent rising damp from reaching the new floor. The entire structure was then insulated with natural materials, using a cladding made of wood fiber and reed matting. The insulation was covered with a lime based plaster, ensuring that the spaces were well-insulated, but also healthy and free of moisture. All building systems were rethought and rebuilt from scratch. For the heating system, we chose a hybrid system, which works well at both low and high temperatures, optimizing the energy efficiency of the entire apartment. Our clients initially feared that the use of reed insulation would compromise the modern aesthetic they desired for their home, but the final result exceeded all expectations: the chosen technology solved the technical problems without sacrificing the desired architectural identity.
serendipità

A Matter of Serendipity

The term serendipity refers to the ability to find something when you least expect it, or when you are looking for something else. This was the case for this project. Our clients found us through a series of random circumstances, precisely when they wanted to rethink their home. They didn't know us or our approach, yet they chose to trust us completely. And, as happens in the most fortunate of coincidences, we immediately found a common ground. During the entire design process, our expertise was intertwined with our clients’ needs and their vision of living. All the choices made, from the distribution of spaces to the use of certain materials - like raw steel for the ground floor beams and the internal staircase - and the aesthetic result of the interiors, are the result of this shared design process. Perhaps this is precisely why the final result was so fulfilling for everyone. Years after the project's completion, the house continues to evolve; our clients, still satisfied, have contacted us again to redesign the outdoor space together, a sign that this metamorphosis is truly never over.
